Known as Robin, expressionist artist Philipson was born and raised in Lancashire and, later, Dumfriesshire. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and taught there from 1947 until 1982. Influenced by William Gillies and John Maxwell of the Edinburgh School, Philipson was also inspired by the work of Oscar Kokoschka. A prolific and skilful worker in a variety of mediums, Philipson explored a number of different themes during his career including cock-fighting, cathedrals, the First World War and the American abstract. Noted also for his organizational abilities, Philipson was knighted in 1976 for his services to the arts in Scotland.
