Sir Herbert James Gunn RA 1893-1964

Overview

Gunn was the son of a prosperous draper, and it is through his rendition of cloth and interiors that his portraits are so successful. His wife, Gwendoline Hillman, was a muse for the artist throughout their marriage, and his portraits of her throughout the 1920s helped cement his decision to transition from his beginnings as a landscape artist to a society portraitist. He would achieve great fame and repute in this role, completing royal commissions and receiving a knighthood for his services to the arts.
