William Hanna Clarke originally trained as a dentist, attending evening art classes at Glasgow School of Art. He moved to Kirkcudbright in 1916 at the age of 34 to practice as an artist full-time, and went on to exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, and in Liverpool. He died at the age of 42 in a building accident during construction of a new house in Kirkcudbright.
