Sir George Harvey 1806-1876

Sir George Harvey made his name with paintings of historical subjects; working in both oil and watercolour he also painted superb landscapes, some portraits, and scenes of Scottish life, in the spirit of Wilkie and Geikie. Harvey was born near Stirling and trained at The Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, where he was taught by Sir William Allan.

In 1826 he was invited to join the newly-founded Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) as an associate; he worked tirelessly on behalf of the RSA and became its President in 1864. Sir George Harvey was knighted in 1867.
