Christian Jane Fergusson, born in Dumfries, first  studied art at the Crystal Palace School of Art in London. Following this, she attended the Glasgow School of Art. Alongside her artistic practice, Fergusson went on to become the Principal Teacher of Art at the Glasgow High School for Girls.

As well as painting, Fergusson produced metalwork and tapestry pieces, becoming one of the Glasgow Girls group of artists.

In 1922 Fergusson co-founded the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society, alongside Jessie M. King, E.A. Taylor and E.A. Hornel.

In 1928 Fergusson was elected to the Society of Scottish Artists.
