  • > Fritz Eichenberg
1901 - 1990
Originally from Cologne, printmaker and illustrator Fritz Eichenberg moved with his wife and children to New York in 1933. While the majority of Eichenberg's works illustrate scenes from famous works of fiction, 'The Subway' is one of four self-published woodcuts created shortly after their emigration that document his initial impressions of the city.

Eichenberg would later become head of the art department at the University of Rhode Island, and was instrumental in the creation of their printmaking studios.
