  • > William Page Atkinson Wells
1872 - 1923
Wells was born in Glasgow but studied at the Slade. After college he travelled, spending time in Australia and then France. He returned to Britain and settled in Preston in Lancashire for seven years before finally moving to Appledore in Devon. Wells painted rural scenes, usually with slight figured farm girls, demurely looking downwards from beneath their bonnets. Most often they are tending to chickens or walking through a field. His technique of thickly applied oil, building up a heavily textured impasto, gives a very physical presence to his subject and in particular the fields of grasses and wild flowers which he so often sets his pictures.
