  • > Andrew Geddes ARA
1783 - 1844
Andrew Geddes was born and educated in Edinburgh and enjoyed copying his father's collection of engravings in his spare time. Resolving to become a painter, he moved to London in 1806 to study at the Royal Academy schools. Returning to Edinburgh, Geddes established a reputation as a portrait painter. During his career he travelled to France and Holland to study the Old Masters. He later settled in Italy for a while before returning to London for the remainder of his life. Geddes also painted landscapes but it is his etchings - of landscapes, portraits and old masters - which are of particular merit.
