Alexander Carse was born at Innerwick, Haddington. After studying under genre painter David Allan, he enrolled at the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh. Carse's oils of the early nineteenth century are of Scottish village scenes and activities. Between 1812 and 1820 he lived in London, at the same time as his 'competitor', Wilkie.
