  • > Sir George Pirie PRSA HRSW
1866 - 1946
Sir George Pirie was born at Campbeltown, Argyll, and educated in Glasgow. Having graduated from Glasgow University he then studied at Glasgow School of Art, the Slade, London and at the Académie Julian, Paris. Principally a painter of animals and birds, Pirie was very much in tune with his subjects and kept a variety of creatures at his home in Torrance, Stirlingshire. He was a fine draughtsman, often using watercolour, bodycolour and pastel with pencil. Based in or near Glasgow for most of his career, Pirie also travelled to America, Spain and Morocco. He became President of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1933 and was knighted in 1937.
